Another good newsletter, Alison. A topic to consider for a future issue: you noted that Şilan Ayyildiz is 25 years old. I'm old enough to remember the NCAA's effort (in the 1980s) to implement age limits for competitors. Now it seems there are no limits, EXCEPT that if after your 21st birthday you have competed in an event (e.g. road race, cross country meet or track race), you lose a year of eligibility. One, I wonder when the rule changed, two, I wonder if people are policing this (e.g. did Şilan Ayyildiz really not compete at all in the sport before she matriculated at Oregon, and three, why are BYU athletes consistently excepted from the rules (the "religious mission" clause. If you dive in on this, it would be interesting (though time-consuming) to investigate the ages that correspond to top-10 NCAA times.
As a recreational runner and fan of your newsletter, I feel honored to get a birthday mention in your newsletter!
Hey, you do read the whole way through the newsletter. You passed the test 😀 I hope you have a lovely day!
Happy birthday!!
Happy Birthday, Ruth Wade! Your daughter rocks…and I suspect it’s partly because you rock too!
